The US Silver Eagles Are Highly Desirable Today
The official silver bullion of the United States is the US silver eagle coin. These coins have been made since 1986 and introduced to the public by the US Mint from that year to 2008. There were no proofs or uncirculated special editions made for 2009 or 2010. It is unsure whether there will be further strikings of US Silver Eagles in the years to come even though these coins are highly collectible. This news has come as a disappointment to many collectors.
The proof silver eagles are struck with special dies prepared specifically for these coins and they feature a beautiful cameo finish that has made them very popular to collectors. US Silver Eagles have been struck at 3 different mint facilities over the years. The first were struck at the San Francisco Mint with the "S" mark from the years 1986 to 1992. The Philadelphia Mint took the second mintage from 1993 to 2000 and bore the "P" mint mark. Finally, the third striking of this coin was done at the West Point Mint from 2001 to 2008 and included the "W" mint mark.
Over the years, depending on the price of silver and the demand for it (especially in collectible coins), the Proof American Silver Eagle coin has been produced in limited numbers. For instance, the 1990 was the first US Silver Eagles with a limited striking. There were only 700,000 1990 silver eagles produced and sold out rather quickly. The following years varied in production limits. These limitations were lifted in 2005 and were produced according to demand all the way up to 2008.

Most of these coins are sold separately, however, there are some proof sets like the 1995 W silver eagle that was sold with the 10th anniversary set of 1996 and the 3 coin set of 2006 which commemorated the 20th anniversary of US Silver Eagles that included the bullion, proof and uncirculated mintage versions. Other highly collectible coin sets in the silver eagle include the 1993 proof with the $5, $10, $25 versions and the Bicentennial set minted in Philadelphia and the 1997 Liberty platinum eagle series. |
